Man found in ditch near Sehome Village identified

BELLINGHAM - A homeless man found dead this week in an overgrown ditch near Sehome Village has been identified.

Landscapers came upon the body of Michael J. Jarry, 52 - wearing a brown coat, dark jeans and running shoes - face-down in the ditch near the northeast edge of the Sehome Haggen parking lot around 2 p.m. Monday.

Investigators believe he had been there for more than a week, possibly several weeks, shrouded from view by thick cattails.

An autopsy found no signs of inflicted trauma. Pending toxicology tests, it's believed he succumbed to long-term illicit drug use or heart disease, said Whatcom County Medical Examiner Gary Goldfogel.

Jarry briefly lived at an apartment on East Holly Street. The last time police contacted him, he had no fixed address. He had not been reported missing. Authorities said he had family ties in the Midwest. Detectives had been waiting to track down and notify the family before releasing Jarry's name.
