Whatcom election results final except for one recount

Whatcom County election officials certified the results of the Nov. 5 general election on Tuesday, Nov. 26, but one result is not final.

The race for commissioner in Fire District 21 between Roger Hawley and Dean Berkeley requires a recount. Fire District 21 is better known as North Whatcom Fire and Rescue.

Berkeley leads Hawley by 31 votes with 7,585 ballots cast. State law requires a machine recount when the lead is less than 0.5 percent, or in this case 38 votes.

The recount will take place on Friday, Dec. 13, and Monday, Dec. 16, with results tallied immediately after, county Auditor Debbie Adelstein said.

The secretary of state will certify statewide results by Dec. 5.

A chart of certified Whatcom County results will publish in the Friday, Nov. 29, issue of The Bellingham Herald.
