Sounders to open 2014 MLS season

don.ruiz@thenewstribune.comNovember 26, 2013

Seattle Sounders FC will begin its Major League Soccer season at home for the sixth consecutive year, this time March 8 at CenturyLink Field against MLS Cup finalist Sporting Kansas City.

The match also will mark the first kick of the 2014 MLS season.

Each team’s 34-game schedule announced Monday uses the same format as the past two seasons. Western Conference teams will play three games against every team in their own conference and one game against each member of the Eastern Conference.

Home and road sites reverse from the previous season, which means the Sounders will play four of their six Cascadia Cup matches on the road.

The Portland Timbers will visit Seattle on July 13, while the Sounders will visit Jeld-Wen Field in Portland on April 5 and Aug. 24.

The Vancouver Whitecaps will visit Oct. 10, while the Sounders will go to BC Place on May 24 and July 5.

Eleven Sounders home games will be played on Saturdays, with two each on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Thirteen Sounders matches are scheduled for national telecast on either the ESPN or NBC networks. The Sept. 2 match at New York and the Oct. 25 regular-season finale against Los Angeles will be shown on NBC.

As previously announced, the Sounders’ Aug. 2 match at San Jose will mark the opening of Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., the new home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers.

MLS will take a two-week break from June 12-24 during the group phase of the World Cup in Brazil.

The current MLS season will conclude Dec. 7, when Real Salt Lake visits Kansas City in the MLS Cup final.

ADDED TIME

Dillon Powers was named MLS rookie of the year Monday after recording five goals and six assists for the Colorado Rapids. Sounders FC defender DeAndre Yedlin was third in the voting. Portland’s Darlington Nagbe received the individual fair play award, while the team award went to the Los Angeles Galaxy. … The Sounders made no selections in the MLS Waiver Draft on Monday. The club made midfielder Philip Lund available, and, though he was not selected, he is free to sign elsewhere.
