Body found in ditch near Sehome Haggen parking lot

BELLINGHAM - A landscaping crew found a body in a ditch Monday afternoon, Nov. 25, near the northeast edge of the Sehome Haggen parking lot.

The body was discovered about 2 p.m. face-down in muddy ditch water between the parking lot and 36th Street, where the view is obscured by overgrown cattails, said Bellingham Police Lt. Rick Sucee.

Police cordoned off the area. The person's identity - and apparent cause of death - remained under investigation Monday afternoon.

"I don't know if it's a man or a woman," Sucee said. "I don't know if it's been there 10 minutes or 10 days."

The person wore a brownish coat, dark jeans and running shoes, Sucee said. Police expected more information would be released after forensics experts examine the body.
