Ferndale thankful for the experience of state despite early exit

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDNovember 16, 2013

The Ferndale volleyball team doesn't go to state often, and as an unknown team with young players, was bounced out early with two losses to Columbia River and Prarie on Friday, Nov. 15.

It was the Golden Eagles' first trip to state in three years and coach Patti Hoelzle thinks that may have had something to do with the early exit. Ferndale's only player who has been to the state tournament before is Hannah Carlson.

"It was a lot of the players' first experience going to state," Hoelzle said in a phone interview. "It was a really eye-opening experience for them. It's extremely noisy there. Most teams go year after year and being the newcomer not a lot of people know us and that probably worked against us."

The Ferndale team will graduate five seniors this season. Tori Fox, Hannah Carlson, Sarah Erdman, Hannah Pitsch and Brooke Benson have all donned the gold and blue for the last time.
