LAKEWOOD The Lynden volleyball team defeated Fife 25-21, 25-13, 25-22 in the consolation semifinals at the Class 2A State Volleyball Championships on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Pierce College in Lakewood.
The Lions, led by junior hitter Kat Webb, who recorded 18 kills and 14 digs, advance to play in the 7th-, 8th-place game against Squalicum at 3 p.m.
Its amazing because we didnt even think we were going to qualify for districts, Lynden coach Julie Clift said. Theyve taken this opportunity and embraced it. This chance to even go play in the district tournament even though you are at a low seed, and they took it and made it into something. Its just awesome to see for them, and its a great confidence builder.
Regardless of the outcome, both Lynden and Squalicum guaranteed themselves a trophy at state, as the top eight placers receive trophies. Weve been trying to focus on one step at a time this whole postseason process, Clift said. Last night, it was, We want to get a trophy. Weve come this far, and now were here. From this point on, we can enjoy the process.
Squalicum advanced to meet Lynden in the 7th-, 8th-place game after defeating Yakima East Valley 25-18 25-17, 20-25, 25-13 in the consolation semifinals.
Like Lynden, the Storm secured at least an eighth-place finish at state, which is quite the accomplishment for a team that before this season, had never even won a district playoff game.
