Stricter weight limit placed on Badger Road bridge near Lynden

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDNovember 15, 2013

LYNDEN - The weight limit on a damaged bridge on West Badger Road has been reduced from 25 tons to 15 tons "out of an abundance of caution," said Joe Rutan, assistant Whatcom County director of public works.

The initial, less restrictive limit was announced Nov. 6, shortly after a routine inspection found damage to a wooden support under the road surface. County Public Works called for the greater restriction on Friday, Nov. 15, after further assessing the risk to the bridge, Rutan said.

"There was no additional damage," he said.

Truckers have several options for avoiding the bridge that's just east of Axling Road. About 3,000 vehicles per day cross the bridge, many of them commercial trucks traveling from the Sumas border crossing to Interstate 5, Rutan said.
