Veterans to be honored Nov. 11 at Whatcom County events

Events across Whatcom County will honor veterans on Monday, Nov. 11. These events are free unless otherwise noted.

REMEMBRANCE RIDE

9 a.m. breakfast, 11 a.m. program, Monday, Nov. 11

Ferndale.

Car and motorcycle enthusiasts are encouraged to gather for breakfast at Cedars Restaurant, 2019 Main St., followed by a ride to the Ferndale American Legion Hall, 5537 Second Ave., weather permitting. At 11 a.m., a short program honoring veterans will begin at the hall. The chiefs of Ferndale Police Department and Whatcom County Fire District 7 will be honored. Guest speaker is Brian Urban. Refreshments served after the program.

DEMING COMMEMORATION

11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11

Mount Baker High School Auditorium, 4936 Deming Road, Deming.

The 10th annual Deming Veterans Day Commemoration by Wendall H. Fidele American Legion Post 83 will honor Gordon Kelly, who commanded the post from 1989 to 2007. Doris Kent, a Gold Star mother and volunteer veteran service officer, also will speak.

Veterans and active duty military encouraged to attend.

AMERICAN LEGION CEREMONY

11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11

Bellingham City Hall, 210 Lottie St.

Veterans to be honored by Albert J. Hamilton American Legion Post 7 at a. ceremony in the City Hall lobby. Music begins at 10:30 a.m. with ceremony at 11 featuring keynote speaker retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jerry Couchman. Bellingham High School Alumni Band and the Bellingham Pipe Band are scheduled to perform.

CHARTER COLLEGE CEREMONY

1-3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11

Charter College, 410 W. Bakerview Road, Suite 112, Bellingham.

Charter College and KGMI radio host a Veterans Day celebration that includes local dignitaries and a talk on GI education benefits. Free buffet lunch and an iPad giveaway. All veterans in attendance will receive a thank you gift.

VFW POST 1585

1-6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11

VFW Hall, 625 N. State St., Bellingham

All veterans are welcome at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post for salad, soup and sandwiches, and meet other veterans.

FEES WAIVED AT STATE PARKS

Nov. 11

In honor of Veterans Day, no Discover Pass is required for state parks, including the three in Whatcom County: Birch Bay State Park, Larrabee State Park and Peace Arch State Park.
