Jones leads Meridian to blowout

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDNovember 9, 2013

The Letrez Jones show was playing for Meridian Saturday, Nov. 9, as the senior running back propelled the Trojans to a 49-0 victory over Charles Wright in the Class 1A Tri-District Playoffs.

Charles Wright had no answers for the diminutive Jones, who saw nothing but green from the second quarter on and finished with five touchdowns, 284 yards on the ground and 309 total,.

"He's a leader, a great athlete, a great kid and very unselfish," Meridian head coach Bob Ames said of Jones after the game. "If somebody has to come out, he'll come out just to be able to sub somebody else in so they can play. We're lucky he's on our side."

With the win, Meridian earned a trip to the Class 1A State Playoffs and will travel to face Cashmere in the first round on either Friday or Saturday, Nov. 15 or 16.

With scoring drives up 61, 57 and 6, Jones displayed not only breakaway speed, but the ability to simply overpower defenders, as he did when he de-cleated Charles Wright cornerback Desmond Jones with a stiff arm on his way to his third touchdown.

In total, the Trojans finished the night with 498 total yards - 379 on the ground and 119 in the air.

To go with Jones' impressive display, the Trojans defense stood strong and fended off Charles Wright counter drives, only allowing the Tarriers to get into the red zone one time.

On the night, Charles Wright was limited to just 88 total yards and turned the ball over three times.

"They were playing without all their starters," Ames said of the Charles Wright offense. "All three of them got hurt in the Cascade Christian game. You take away your No. 1 receiver and your second rusher, the fastest man in Class A, that will take a lot out of you.

"They came out spirited and they did what they could do, but with these small schools, if you get a couple kids hurt and we're in trouble."
