Pioneers eliminated from tournament after two defeats in one day

Nooksack Valley failed to make it to state after losing both of its games on Saturday, Nov. 9, in the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament.

The Pioneers first lost to South Whidbey 25-22, 26-24, 23-25, 25-15 to send them to the "win or go home" game against Forest Ridge.

Nooksack lost that game as well, this time by a score of 25-13, 25-14, 25-22.

Lindsay Hayes led the team on the day with 12 kills and 17 digs between both games. Taryn Tenkley added 10 kills and 20 digs as well. Mariah Perry was another stand-out player for the Pioneers, as she recorded 40 digs on the day.

"I think that this team surprised a lot of people," coach Katie Emmons said in a phone interview. "Expectations weren't high, but they played well together. The defense was continuously improving, but we just got outplayed in districts."

Nooksack finished its season 11-10.
