Ferndale volleyball won its first Class 3A district title on Saturday, Nov. 9, defeating Oak Harbor 25-17, 25-21, 17-25, 26-24.
The Golden Eagles came close to winning a state title three years ago, but fell in five sets. This was a much different feeling, though.
"There isn't a group that deserves this more," coach Patti Hoelzle said in a phone interview.
Whitney Walker led the team with 12 kills and behind her was Abby Reid with 27 assists.
"We came out strong, which is something we have been doing," Hoelzle said. "We took care of errors and played with heart in a high-pressure situation. It's exciting volleyball when teams are as good as these two. Every matchup matters and rallies can go either way."
Sarah Erdman and Hannah Carlson each had 15 digs.
"Defense is the foundation of our team," Hoelzle said. "As long as we can take balls out the defense and execute them into offense, we will be contending for a state championship."
The Golden Eagles now move into the state tournament, which starts on Friday, Nov. 15.
"We don't want to just show up, we want to be contenders," Hoelzle said.
