Lummi's Medina turns in strong effort

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDNovember 9, 2013

For only his second 5,000-meter race of the season Lummi junior Enrique Medina did well at the Class 1B State Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

Medina finished 43rd overall in a personal-best time of 17 minutes, 56.80 seconds.

Medina, who last qualified for state in 2011, knocked more than 40 seconds off his state time, and 10 seconds off his tri-district winning time from a week earlier. Last week's run was his first on a 5,000-meter course this year.

"He kept saying, 'I did the best I could with the runs I had this year,'" coach Amy Kruckeberg said in a phone interview. "He came and he worked really hard. He's been running mostly around Lake Padden, instead of on the bigger course, so I thought he ran great."

Colbert Northwest Christian won the overall team title, while Asotin's Chandler Teigen won the individual crown in 15:52.99.

CLASS 3A BOYS

Ferndale sophomore Roberto Aguilera finished 68th in 16:41.55 in his first trip to the state meet.

North Central claimed the team title and was led by individual team champion Tanner Anderson in 14:44.6.
