Ferndale volleyball met top-seeded Mountlake Terrace in the second round of the 3A Northwest District Tournament, but was unfazed by the daunting challenge. The Golden Eagles sailed to a 25-16, 20-25, 25-19, 25-22 victory on Thursday, Nov. 7, at Mountlake Terrace High School behind strong defensive play.
"Whitney (Walker), Taryn (Potter), and our libero Tori Fox were really tough on serve-receive on defense," Ferndale coach Patti Hoelzle said in a phone interview.
Walker finished with 19 digs and Potter added 18 more for Ferndale. Brooke Benson was also solid on defense for the Golden Eagles with four blocks.
Benson also led Ferndale with 14 kills, and Abby Reid had 41 assists. Hoelzle was proud of her team's composure against a higher-ranked opponent, especially after losing the second set.
"It's tricky when you come out really strong and the other team answers like they did," she said. "But this team is mature, they know how to adjust on the court. Sometimes we have to take a breath and move forward one point at a time."
Ferndale will take on Oak Harbor in the district championship game at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Glacier Peak High School. Ferndale saw Oak Harbor in a tournament earlier this season, and Hoelzle is confident her team will again rise to the challenge.
"They have hard hitters and servers," she said. "Our girls feel close, confident and they're excited. ... They all trust each other and that's the foundation of our success in the postseason."
Time for championship match corrected on Nov. 8.
