Ferndale holds off Stanwood, advances to second round at districts

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDNovember 5, 2013

Ferndale volleyball moved on to the second round of the District 1 3A Volleyball Tournament by stymieing Stanwood's comeback attempt late in the match. The Golden Eagles won 25-16, 25-20, 20-25, 21-25, 15-7 on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at Mountlake Terrace High School.

"We came out strong in the match," Ferndale coach Patti Hoelzle said in a phone interview. "We had been playing well heading into the postseason and wanted to jump out to the lead."

Middle blocker Hannah Pitsch led the Golden Eagles' attack with 13 kills in the match.

"Hannah stood out by continually making smart plays at the net," Hoelzle said.

Outside hitter Taryn Potter added 10 kills for Ferndale, and libero Tori Fox led the defense with 21 digs. Setter Abby Reid also had 31 assists.

After jumping out to an early lead, Ferndale struggled through the third and fourth set, but was able to hold off Stanwood when it mattered most.

"In the third and fourth sets Stanwood made all the right adjustments and hit around our blocks," Hoelzle said. "(In the first two sets) we were executing by limiting errors, and our hitters were finding their spots.

Hoelzle pointed to Ferndale's veteran leaders for helping keep the team in the right state of mind to hold off Stanwood's comeback attempt.

"Abby Reid and Hannah Carlson, our captains, were a calm presence on the court," she said. "We were starting a freshman and a sophomore, so (Reid and Carlson) set a good example of staying calm and executing under pressure."

Ferndale will take on the winner of the Mountlake Terrace-Glacier Peak match at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, at Mountlake Terrace High School in the second round of the district tournament.
