Sean Russell scored the only goal of the game, giving Seattle Pacific University a 1-0 triumph over Western Washington University in a tightly played Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest Thursday at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
The Vikings, who had a four-match winning streak snapped, fell to 9-4-3 overall and 7-2-3 in GNAC play. The loss probably eliminated any remaining hopes of WWU reaching the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
The lone goal came in the 18th minute. Blaine Carver headed down a ball back to Russell, who ran onto the pass and unloaded a blast from 35 yards out that flew into the upper right corner.
The Vikings had a series of chances early on, forcing three saves by Falcon goalkeeper Cody Lang, including a Tye Hastings effort that Lang tipped around the post for a corner kick just 90 seconds in.
