Top-seeded Meridian girls' soccer advanced to the second round of the 1A Northwest District Tournament with a 6-0 win over eight-seeded Nooksack Valley on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Meridian High School. Taylor Lunde led the Trojans' attack with two goals and an assist.
"We were able to spread the ball around a lot and get a lot of players in the game," Meridian coach Andrea Ames said in a phone interview. "It gave a lot of girls different opportunities. We're just trying to get all our varsity players healthy, and now that junior varsity is done, we can plug some of them in."
Meridian's Lexi McKinnon added a goal and two assists, and goalkeeper Sydney Gospodinovich saved all three of the Pioneers' shots. The Trojans outshot Nooksack Valley 22-3. They play South Whidbey at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at home.
"We could finish a little better (in the next round). We took 22 shots and only scored six goals," Ames said. "We had a lot of offsides tonight. I'm sure it was double-digit offsides. We need to clean that up a bit."
