Another hotel planned in Bellingham's north end

BELLINGHAM - The new hotel boom in the northern part of town continues as plans are in the works for a five-story lodging facility.

The Oxford Hotel Group recently submitted a building permit application to put in retaining walls on property at 4051 Meridian St., which is tucked on the west side of the Pier 1 Imports store.

The application is one of the early steps in building a five-story, 99-room Oxford Suites hotel. Along with rooms, the facility will have meeting space, a pool, fitness center and a restaurant, said Edmund Wadeson, the lead administrator and project manager for the Oxford Hotel Group.

Wadeson said they expect to start grading the property early next year, with construction starting next summer. It'll take about a year to build once construction starts, so he estimates the hotel will be ready in the summer of 2015.

Headquartered in Bend, Ore., the Oxford Hotel Group has Oxford Suites hotels in 14 cities, including Silverdale. Wadeson said they have no specific segment focus, with business and recreation travelers regularly staying at the suites. Some of the rooms will have extended-stay capability with kitchenette, and the Oxford Suites offer complimentary continental hot breakfasts. According to the Oxford Suites website for the Silverdale facility, rates start at around $120 a night.

This new project continues what's been a sudden uptick of new hotels being built in northern Bellingham. Earlier this month the 122-unit SpringHill Suites by Marriott opened at 4040 Northwest Ave., near the West Bakerview Road intersection. Hundreds more hotel rooms are expected to be built in that area in the next few years:

- Early next year, Marriott will break ground on an 83-unit TownePlace Suites, which will be next to SpringHill and offer an extended-stay format.

- LaQuinta is finishing construction on an 81-room hotel on West Bakerview Road.

- Hilton has submitted building permits to build a 106-room extended-stay hotel near SpringHill Suites.

- Holiday Inn is expected to begin construction next spring on a 150-room hotel near Bellingham International Airport.
