County teams advance to NCYFL semifinals


Three Whatom County teams have advanced to the semifinal round of the North Cascades Youth Football League playoffs.

The Bellingham Junior team, coached by Daryl Toctocan, defeated Burlington 16-14 and will face Stanwood at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Sedro-Wooley High School.

The Bellingham Red Senior team, coached by Preston Knutson, defeated La Conner 38-8 and will face Oak Harbor at 11 a.m. at Mount Vernon High School.

The Ferndale Senior team, coached by Riley Cornelson, defeated Mount Vernon 32-6 and will play Sedro-Wooley at 1 p.m. at Mount Vernon High School.

Winners will advance to the league Super Bowl on Saturday, Nov. 9th.


The Whatcom Tesseract runners finished its regular season in style at the Rain City Stampede at Woodland Park in Seattle.

In the 11-12 girls' division, Emmie Sullivan finished first with a time of 11 minutes, 30 seconds; in the 13-14 girls' division, Kristen Garcia won with a time of 15:48 and Quincy Gale was second with a time of 15:50; and in the 15-18 girls' division, Zanna Sullivan won with a time of 15:46 and Lainey Lesh was second with a time of 16:26.

In the 13-14 boys' division, Cade Brown was second with a time of 14:25.


With snow starting to fall at Mt. Baker Ski Area, the Lynden School District is preparing for the Winter Ride Bus ski and snowboard season.

The program is an eight-trip chaperoned program that starts Jan. 11.

It is open to 5th through 12th graders who live within the Lynden School District boundaries.

An informational meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in the Isom Elementary. Representatives from Lynden's program and from the Mt. Baker Ski Area will be present to answer any questions.

The Gladiator Grapplers Wrestling Program, sponsored by the Bellingham Parks & Recreation, will start in early December for youth in kindergarten to 6th grade.

The program, which takes place at the Sehome High School wrestling room, will be from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 2, 9, 16, 30 and Jan. 6.

Cost is $35 and includeds a T-shirt and free admission to a Sehome wrestling meet.
