THE BELLINGHAM HERALDOctober 26, 2013

Squalicum High School graduate Hannah Truong will be featured on Katie Couric's talk show on ABC Monday, Oct. 28 after receiving the 2013 National Student Volunteer of the Year award from Scholarship America.

The first in her family to attend college, Truong is a freshman at Yale University, where she works in student government and does outreach work with homeless people in the New Haven, Conn. Community, said Mauri Ingram, Whatcom Community Foundation CEO.

The award is given as part of the national Dollars for Scholars program. Truong was first selected as one of 24 students nationwide to receive the $1,000 Community Volunteer Service Award. From that group she was picked as volunteer of the year. As national winner she'll receive an extra $3,000, to be paid out in $1,000 chunks each of the next three years of college, Ingram said.
