Mariners fall after grabbing early lead

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDOctober 25, 2013

BELLINGHAM - It was a tale of two halves at Civic Stadium on Friday, Oct. 25.

Sehome made it exciting in the first half and took a 17-14 lead into the lockers, but it was all Sedro-Woolley in the second half as the Cubs pulled away for a 49-24, Class 2A win.

It may have been the Mariners' Daniel Ziegler making the highlight plays, but it was the Cubs' Shawn Kennedy that stole the show.

Kennedy rushed for 137 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries to lead Sedro-Woolley (6-2, NWC 5-1). It looked like Kennedy would get overshadowed after Sehome's strong first half.

Sehome's first drive got off to a rough start after a bad snap forced Sehome (3-5, NWC 2-4) to lay on it for a loss of 6 yards. But the Mariners didn't let a second-and-16 stop them, drawing up a double reverse to Ziegler that netted 15 yards.

The play spurred Sehome to a 49-yard, six-minute drive that ended with a 33-yard field goal by Samuel Diehl to put the Mariners on the board first.

Sedro-Woolley was unable to counter on its drive, despite a 36-yard Braden Blouin run as he scampered around the outside and turned to put the Cubs in prime scoring position on the 11-yard line.

Sedro-Woolley couldn't pound it in from there and turned the ball over on downs.

The Cubs didn't roll over, though. The next possession they forced Sehome to go four-and-out on and got the ball back to do some scoring of their own.

Sedro-Woolley's Kennedy led the Cubs on a 34-yard drive, ending in a 5-yard touchdown run by the 175-pound running back with 8:03 left in the second half.

Ziegler was having none of it and on the next possession with nobody open on third-and-14, he took off. He broke to the right before making his way back from the far side of the field to the home-team sideline. He turned on the jets at the 50-yard line and walked in for the 91-yard touchdown run. The extra point was good and the Mariners were back in the lead, 10-7 with 6:16 left in the half.

"I just wanted to use my speed and get around the outside," Ziegler said. "I got some good blocks from my receivers."

The big play didn't help the defensive players, who were visibly fatigued and let up a 78-yard drive that culminated in another pounding touchdown run by Kennedy.

With only 2:42 left on the clock, the Mariners had to make something big happen to go into the locker room with the lead. On third-and-27 it looked like Ziegler was going to do it again.

He broke free down the sideline after scrambling around in the pocket and it looked like he was going to take a trip to the end zone but it was ruled that he stepped out of bounds at Sehome's 42-yard line. Three plays later Blaise Black fumbled and the Cubs took over.

Sedro-Woolley didn't want the ball, either, coughing it up on a fumble at the Sehome 40-yard line with only 19 seconds on the clock.

It took only one play for Ziegler to find the end zone from there, tossing it 30-yards to a streaking Evan Mikovsky, who ran another 30 for the 60-yard touchdown play with only 10.1 seconds on the clock. Sehome went into halftime with the 17-14 lead.

Ziegler ended the game with 166 yards on 18 carries and 126 yards on 19 pass attempts, but it was his first half playmaking ability that bolstered his statistics.
