Sehome girls' soccer tops Nooksack Valley

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDOctober 22, 2013

Sehome girls' soccer defeated Nooksack Valley 5-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Nooksack Valley. The Mariners were led by Emily Webster's two goals and one assist.

Webster's first goal came in the 10th minute on a cross from Marie Kochman that she struck at the Pioneers' goalkeeper, but the goalkeeper bobbled the ball and it went into the goal. Webster assisted on the next goal a minute later by Kate Peterson. Sehome added three more before Janis DeJager put in Nooksack Valley's lone goal in the 72nd minute.

"We really focused on passing," Sehome coach Andria Fountain said in a phone interview. "I had people play different positions for the experience and to see what it's like when 'the shoe is on the other foot.'"

Fountain was impressed with Sascha Guenter-Schlesinger's effort off the bench. Sehome goalkeeper Hannah Lauffer scored from the midfield position in the 68th minute, which Fountain said was exciting for the team as it was Lauffer's first time playing in the field.

Sehome's next game is at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Northwest Fields against Meridian. Nooksack Valley plays next at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Northwest Fields against Bellingham.
