Sehome boys' tennis in singles and doubles finals

The Sehome boys' tennis team has a player in the singles final and a team in the doubles final as the Class 2A Bi-District District Tournament continued Monday, Oct. 21, at Mount Vernon.

The tournament was moved to Mount Vernon earlier Monday as fog kept the courts slick at Sehome High School.

Sehome's Brady Anderson, who is 18-1 on the season, gave up a total of five games in his two straight-set victories to land in singles final.

Anderson will face Sammamish's Ethan Romney, who handed Anderson his only loss of the season, on Tuesday, Oct. 22, to decide a champion and punch a ticket to the state tournament in May, 2014.

"Brady had a good day," Sehome coach Bonna Giller said in a phone interview. "He went in and took care of tennis and was focused and eliminated his opponents."

Sehome's doubles team of Max Shmolotohka and Reece Gilbert also won both their matches, including a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Lynden's Ben Mulder and Dakota Davis in a semifinal, to advance to the doubles final.

They will face Lake Washington's Fergy Lu and Tristan Jiminez in the final on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Sehome with the winner advancing to state.

"They are playing really strong tennis," Giller said of her doubles team. "They had a real solid outing today."

Another berth to state is still available in singles and doubles, and the losers of the finals and the four teams or players in the consolation brackets are still battling for that berth.

In singles, Bellingham's Charlie Carmichael and Sehome's Sam Humphreys are still alive with consolation second round matches.

In doubles, Squalicum's team of Kevin Smiley and Drew Segren will face Lynden's Mulder and Davis in one of the consolation second round matches, and Bellingham has a matchup of Red Raiders in the other consolation second round match with Nick Nolan and Connor Thompson facing off with Liam Miszczak and Nate Pearsall.

"We're still alive," Bellingham coach Steve Chronister said in a phone interview. "There is more good than bad for us."

The consolation matches and finals in singles and doubles will all start at noon Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Sehome High School. The second berth to state in singles and doubles will not be determined until Wednesday, Oct. 23.
