Bellingham doubles show strong at district qualifier

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDOctober 19, 2013

BELLINGHAM - Everyone loves an underdog story and Bellingham's Chris Nakatani and Chad Cheldelin delivered in the Class 2A district qualifier on Saturday, Oct. 19.

Cheldelin and Nakatani scored the upset of the day with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win over Lynden's Grant Wolffis and Tylar Holden. Wolffis, usually Lynden's No. 1 singles player, paired with Holden to advance farther in the tournament, but it didn't pay off.

Bellingham's No. 3 doubles team played the net with great skill, consistently batting down balls. The front man rarely allowed a ball past him and forced Wolffis and Holden to play over the top.

The first set went to a tiebreaker, and when Bellingham's duo won it, they carried the momentum throughout the second set, taking it 6-1.

"We worked as a team and kept the momentum," Cheldelin said.

The duo remains undefeated on the season, winning all 16 of their matches, but the two credited the unblemished year to playing against inferior opponents during the regular season.

"That was our toughest match of the year," Nakatani said. "It feels great to win."

Nakatani and Cheldelin carried that win into the next match against Burlington-Edison's Max Cook and Dante Zimmerman. Bellingham's doubles won again, this time 6-2, 6-4.

"We had momentum from the huge upset," Cheldelin said.

They fell behind in the second set 4-3, but came back to ensure Bellingham had all three of its doubles into the quarterfinals.

"The second set we relaxed a little," Nakatani said. "But once we saw we were behind, we got fired up."

The two will face another Bellingham squad, Liam Miszczak and Nate Pearsall, on Monday, Oct. 21.

"There is a 50-50 chance of winning," Cheldelin said. "We need to practice a lot and work on our shots tomorrow."

Bellingham's team was the star of the day with the doubles teams of Cheldelin and Nakatani along with Miszczak and Pearsall and Nick Nolan and Connor Thompson. Singles player Charlie Carmichael also advanced

Sehome dominated the singles portion of the tournament, advancing Sam Humphreys, Charlie Lahud-Zahner and Brady Anderson.

District play begins again on Monday at 10 a.m. at Sehome High School.
