Roetcisoender cousins lift Lyncs past Pioneers 43-18

Lynden Christian had a response to everything Nooksack Valley wanted to do in a 43-18 win on Friday, Oct. 18, in a Northwest Conference 1A matchup at Lynden Christian.

It took an entire quarter, but Nooksack kicked off six seconds into the second quarter, scoring on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Tanner Myhre to Ryan Gelwicks.

"We talked about coming back from adversity," Lynden Christian coach Galen Kaemingk said. "Last week we didn't do it. This week the kids believed in the plan and they stuck with it."

Lynden Christian responded with a 63-yard touchdown drive, ending with the Roetcisoender cousins, Lucas and Zach, hooking up on a 36-yard pass. The extra point put the Lyncs up 7-6 with 10:21 left in the half.

The cousins connected again on a 4-yard pass on 4th-and-goal with 3:20 to go in the second quarter.

Momentum didn't stop there. Ty Vander Yacht picked off Myhre and took it 64 yards for the touchdown. The Lyncs took a 21-6 lead into halftime along with a team full of confidence.

"The coaches read it," Vander Yacht said. "I just played it and it was off to the races. Everyone was going crazy."

Lynden Christian struck again in the second half on a Blake Mellema touchdown run.

Nooksack Valley looked like it might make the game competitive when the Pioneers scored with 2:36 left in the third quarter on a 9-yard pass from Myhre to Joshua Gimmaka, but Lynden Christian once again answered.

The Roetcisoender cousins wanted to show one more time they can throw it deep, and Zach snatched a would-be interception away from a Pioneers defender and ran it in for the 54-yard score to secure the victory.

Lucas Roetcisoender ended the game with 167 yards on 8 of 11 passing. His cousin ended with four catches for 105 yards.

Nooksack Valley coach Robb Myhre wasn't pleased with the performance.

"There's a gazillion things we need to work on," he said. "We are just not physical on defense. We made some mental mistakes and got in a hole."

The Lyncs are now 1-2 in the NWC, and stay at home to face Meridian on Friday, Oct. 25. Nooksack, which is still winless in conference, plays Friday Harbor at home next Friday.
