Ferndale volleyball win close match against Squalicum

Ferndale battled Squalicum volleyball to a 32-30, 30-28, 23-25, 20-25, 17-15 win on Thursday, Oct. 17, at Squalicum High School.

The Golden Eagles were led by Whitney Walker's 18 kills as they fought with the Storm for each point.

"We knew coming in it was going to be a battle," Ferndale coach Patti Hoelzle said in a phone interview. "We've been working out the kinks on our side. I thought we put it all together tonight and played together as one unit."

Taryn Potter had 17 kills and 20 digs for Ferndale, and Abby Reid added 51 assists. The Golden Eagles improved to 7-4 overall, 6-3 in the Northwest Conference. The Storm fell to 6-5 overall and 5-4 in NCW play.

"Their defense was amazing, every kill they were trying to dig it up," Hoelzle said. "Every single rally could have gone either way. (In the fifth set) I told them to break it down into three little games; keep getting five points at a time, and then repeat what worked for those five points."

Ferndale's next match is at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, at home against Anacortes. Squalicum will look to bounce back at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Mount Baker.
