Golden Eagles update: Ferndale (5-1, 3-1 NWC 2A/3A) suffered its first defeat of the season last week, losing to Sedro-Woolley 32-20. Joey Akers was his usual self, rushing for 192 yards and two TDs, but the Golden Eagles' defense couldn't get off the field in the second half, surrendering 26 unanswered points. Bruising back Marcus Nightingale was limited to 44 yards on 13 carries.

Red Raiders update: Bellingham (0-6, 0-4 NWC 2A/3A) lost to Lynden 48-6 last week. The Red Raiders are reeling after another lopsided defeat, but quarterback Eric Thompson threw for a season-high 129 yards. Despite Melvin Deal's 49 rushing yards, Bellingham ended with only 35 yards on the ground for a 1.5 per-carry average.

Player to watch: Austin Honeycutt has made great strides at linebacker this season, and there should be plenty of big collisions between the athletic sophomore and Deal, who has rushed for a team-high 324 yards.

Key to the game: If the Golden Eagles establish their ground attack early, Bellingham, which hasn't allowed less than 42 points in a game, might be in for another long night against a Ferndale team anxious to rebound from its first loss of the season.

Herald's pick: Ferndale 49-7
