Bellingham grabs share of conference with 6-1 win over Squalicum

The Bellingham boys' tennis team defeated Squalicum 6-1 on Tuesday, Oct.15, at home to earn a share of the Northwest Conference championship with Sehome.

"We are excited to be conference co-champs," Bellingham coach Steve Chronister said in a phone interview.

The third doubles team of Chad Cheldelin and Chris Nakatani stayed undefeated on the season with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Squalicum's Cole Herdman and Luke Reinschmidt. The pair won all 14 of its matches this year and were the only Bellingham pair to not lose a match.

The third and fourth singles matches were both well-played, Chronister said.

Bellingham's Charlie Carmichael defeated Drew Segren 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the third singles and Kevin Smiley of Squalicum beat out Henry Ziels 6-3, 6-4 for Squalicum's only win of the day.

The district tournament begins on Saturday and is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. but may be changed to start at 9 a.m. The official time will be decided Thursday, Oct. 17.
