Squalicum boys' tennis earns win over Ferndale

Squalicum’s Avery Wolfe returns against Ferndale’s Colton Young on Monday, Oct. 14, in Bellingham.


The Squalicum boys' tennis team swept singles play on its way to a 6-1 Northwest Conference victory over Ferndale on Monday, Oct. 14, at Squalicum High School.

At No. 1 singles, Squalicum's Avery Wolfe earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ferndale's Colton Young.

Also in singles play, Squalicum's Carter Thulin beat Joshua Usery 6-0, 6-0, Drew Segren beat Liam Dickman 6-0, 6-0 and Kevin Smiley beat Nikolay Gobelko 6-1, 6-1.

In No. 1 doubles, the Storm team of Carter Nickelson and Tyler Hoback earned a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Ferndale's Rafe Stanage and Chase Olson.

At No. 2 doubles, Squalicum's Nesta Isakovic and Neal Crawford earned a 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-0 victory over Ferndale's Jacob Sorenson and Maxwell Jeffery.

"First and second doubles were closely fought matches. Glad to see we prevailed in those," Squalicum coach Joe O'Brien said in a phone interview. "We also had a really strong showing in singles today."

Ferndale's No. 3 doubles team of Evan Chapin and Tate Freeman earned a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (4) victory over Squalicum's Tim Lann and Brandon Rexroap for the Golden Eagles' only victory.

The Golden Eagles host Burlington-Edison and Squalicum plays at Bellingham to finish off the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Both Northwest Conference matches are at 3:30 p.m.

Postseason play starts this weekend and O'Brien said his players are ready to move on.

"Those guys are getting excited for district play and preparing for that," O'Brien said.
