Backs slate for Whatcom council

COURTESY TO THE BELLINGHAM HERALDOctober 14, 2013

How is it that County Council members Kathy Kershner and Bill Knutzen have no problem spending $375 per hour for a Seattle attorney to fight state planning laws, but when it comes time to feed the hungry or house the homeless, they say no?

Kershner voted two times to deny funding to feed the hungry. She voted against funding domestic violence during a time when the county saw a horrible increase in such violence. Kershner and Knutzen voted against housing the homeless, with Kershner flip-flopping from an earlier commitment.

What I find even more troubling about Kershner, Knutzen and the county planning commission led by Michelle Luke (along with Ben Elenbaas), is what I believe to be their blatant defiance of the fundamental system of checks and balances that forms the basis of our government. Rather than comply with state planning laws, these elected and appointed "officials" are picking and choosing which parts of state law they will obey, effectively destroying the rule of law.

Is this the kind of County Council member you desire? Not me. I want a county council member that will serve all citizens of this county, will agree to abide by the laws of the state and not just those laws they agree with. I am excited to support Carl Weimer and Ken Mann for re-election, and Barry Buchanan and Rud Browne to unseat Kershner and Knutzen. Restore integrity and common sense to the County Council.
