Heavy border traffic expected this weekend for Canadian, American holidays

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDOctober 10, 2013

Expect heavy traffic at Whatcom County border crossings and grocery stores as Canadians prepare for their three-day thanksgiving weekend.

Canadians celebrate their fall holiday on Monday, Oct. 14, in much the same way as Americans celebrate in November. However, the big meal is eaten anytime over the long weekend.

Canadians already have been hitting Whatcom County grocery stores for their holiday fixings. Expect a similar crush into Monday.

Traffic also may be heavier than on other Canadian holiday weekends because some Whatcom County businesses along with federal agencies like the U.S. Postal Service will be closed Monday in observance of Columbus Day.
