Sehome girls' swimming takes down Ferndale


Sehome girls' swimming won every event as the Mariners defeated Ferndale 144-35 on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Arne Hanna Aquatic Center. Sehome remained undefeated at 4-0 overall and 4-0 in the Northwest Conference with the win over Ferndale (1-5, 1-4 NWC).

Ava Baumgarten had one of the closest wins in the 500 freestyle. Baumgarten just barely held off Ferndale's Caitlin Wilhoite, winning the race by 1.16 seconds with a time of 6:30.74.

"Baumgarten looked great with a strong finish after a head-to-head race with Caitlyn," Sehome coach Don Helling wrote in an email.

Megan Mundell won the 50 freestyle (28.55), the 100 backstroke (1:12.17), and helped the 400 freestyle relay team to a win in a time of 4:04.58 to lead the Mariners. Gwen Roley, Ellie Poehlman and Shirley Lam were also on the 400 freestyle relay team.

Hannah Holmgren won the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.30, and helped the 200 medley relay (2:03.93) and 200 freestyle relay (1:51.48) teams to victory. Roley, Lam, and Sophie Grambo were also on the 200 medley relay team, and Roley, Lam and Poehlman were on the 200 freestyle relay.

"We had some very strong relays and great swims from a variety of swimmers," Helling said. "... Ellie (Poehlman) and Hannah (Holmgren) put in strong swims in their wins."

Poehlman also won the 200 freestyle in 2:11.82, and Nina Djukic took the 200 individual medley in 2:46.24. Stephanie Rey scored a win in the diving event with a 137.8, and Miranda Blackburn won the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:06.44. McKenna Sakamoto was victorious in the 100 butterfly at 1:12.83.

Sehome's next meet is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at Fidalgo Pool against Burlington-Edison. Ferndale's next meet is at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Lynden YMCA against Squalicum.
