Hegeberg, Gallant lead Squalicum to win

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDOctober 8, 2013

Josephine Hegeberg improved her state-qualifying time in the 200 individual medley, and Janae Gallant picked up her first varsity win and qualified for district in the 200 freestyle as the Squalicum girls' swim team beat Sedro-Woolley 117-49 in a Northwest Conference meet on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Fidalgo Pool.

"Everybody is still swimming hard," Squalicum coach Steve Gibb said. "Nobody is resting for any meets."

Squalicum (5-0, 4-0 NWC) swept the relays and also got wins from Abby VonFeldt in the 100 freestyle (1 minute, 1.6 seconds), Syndney Wong in the 500 freestyle (5:40.3) and Hegeberg in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.1).

Hegeberg's best performance was in the IM, though, as she swam a time of 2:21.1, a time Gibb called "impressive." Hegeberg also was part of the Storm's winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

Gallant, who joined Hegeberg on the 200 freestyle relay and was also part of the Storm's winning 400 freestyle relay team, turned in a time of 2:26.6 to win the 200 freestyle.

Squalicum next hosts Anacortes on Thursday, Oct. 10, in its home season finale.
