WWU's Boerger earns defensive award

Western Washington University middle blocker Emily Boerger has been named the Red Lion/Great Northwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 29-Oct. 5.

Boerger, a senior from Marysville, had one solo block and eight block assists as the Vikings swept Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington in home matches, holding them to a combined attack percentage of .022.

Boerger also had 19 kills and hit for a .483 percentage in the two wins.

Boerger ranked No. 2 nationally among NCAA Division II hitting percentage leaders entering play last week. She is averaging 2.58 kills per match on .443 hitting and 1.16 blocks.

WWU, 11-1 overall moved up two spots for the fourth straight week to No. 7 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll.
