Bellingham stabbing suspect arrested

BELLINGHAM -- A Bellingham woman has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing another woman in a drunken fight.

Shontae Christine Sullivan, 40, accused the victim of "messing around" with a boyfriend or a family member -- from the police report, it's not exactly clear which -- leading to a scuffle around 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in the 2600 block of West Maplewood Avenue, said Sgt. Shawn Aiumu.

Sullivan got pushed down during in the fight. As she got up, Aiumu said, she whipped out a 4-inch folding knife and stabbed the 25-year-old rival at least once in the lower left torso. The injured woman needed emergency medical aid at St. Joseph hospital.

Police believe at some point a man struck Sullivan in the leg with a baseball bat to ward her off. (He's not facing charges.) Sullivan ran into an apartment to hide the knife in some furniture, Aiumu said. Officers found her in front of the Albertson's on Birchwood and arrested her on suspicion of first-degree assault.

Sullivan appeared to be drunk and possibly high, Aiumu said. Officers recovered the knife from the apartment. It still had blood residue on it.

She had an probable cause warrant for unlawful possession of a payment instrument (for having stolen checks, Aiumu said).

Sullivan has seven felonies on her record. In her most recent conviction, from earlier this year, she kicked a man in the head at least three times after he'd already been beaten unconscious, according to court records. An investigation showed the man had provoked the attack, and Sullivan served a two-month sentence for complicity to second-degree assault.
