Lynden tops Nooksack Valley 3-1


The Lynden girls' soccer team defeated Nooksack Valley 3-1 on Thursday, Oct. 3, at Nooksack Elementary.

Jayme Smits scored the Lions' first goal in the 11th minute. Sofia Milstead added a goal of her own in the 25th minute off an assist from Smits to give Lynden a 2-0 lead.

"I felt like we were putting the pressure on them and getting a lot of shots off," Lynden coach Katie Yoder said in a phone interview. "It was fun to watch Sofia with a goal and an assist, and Jayme had a great game creating a lot of offense."

Tori VandeHoef scored the Pioneers' lone goal on a free kick in the 32nd minute. Lynden quickly answered coming out of the half, with Peyton Fullner scoring Lynden's third goal off a Milstead assist.

"Their keeper made some great saves," Yoder said of Arianna Leyba.

Leyba had 16 saves for Nooksack Valley. Emily Holt had eight for Lynden.
