High school girls' hoops seeks officials

The Northwest Board of Women's Basketball Officials, which provides officials for Whatcom, Skagit, Island and San Juan counties, is seeking people to referee high school girls' basketball games.

A training for new and returning officials will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at LaVenture Middle School, 1200 LaVenture Road, in Mount Vernon.

The season starts in December.

RACE FOR EDUCATION COMING SOON

The 5th Annual Race for Education will be on Oct. 12.

Co-hosted by the Bellingham Public School Foundation and Communities in Schools, this 5K run in and around Bellingham's Civic Stadium is a way to support two organizations that support students.

All participants will receive a tote bag.

The race begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Civic Stadium. Check-in and onsite registration begins at 8 a.m.

Squalicum High School will provide entertainment before and after the race. Visit whatcomraceforeducation.org to register online or visit the Foundation website at foundation.bellinghamschools.org/race-education to download a brochure and pay by check.

The school with the highest percentage participation will earn bragging rights and hang the winner's banner at their school.

PATTERSON HAS HOLE IN ONE

Brian Patterson had a hole in one on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Bellingham Golf & Country Club.

Patterson used a 6-iron on the 168 yard, No. 8 hole.

GIBBONEY ACES HOLE AT RASPBERRY RIDGE

Dan Gibboney of Lynden had his first hole in one in 30 years of golfing.

Gibboney aced the 135 yard, No. 9 hole at Raspberry Ridge Golf Course with a 9-iron.

Witnesses were Mike Crnich and Terry Burke.
