BELLINGHAM - A Bellingham panhandler was arrested after he tried snatch a 71-year-old woman's purse while she paid for parking downtown Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 25.

David Victor Klippert, 54, asked the woman for some change as she dropped coins into a parking meter at 1:40 p.m. in the 1300 block of Railroad Avenue, said Bellingham Police Sgt. Jason Monson.

She refused, so Klippert took a more aggressive approach and grabbed the strap of her purse, Monson said. She pulled away from him. A witness heard the woman yelling and helped police to track down Klippert around the corner in the 100 block of East Holly Street.

Officers arrested him within five minutes of the incident on suspicion of second-degree robbery. The woman wasn't hurt.

Klippert has more than 140 cases listed in municipal and district court records. This would be his first case in more than two decades in Superior Court, where felonies are prosecuted.
