THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 26, 2013

The Squalicum boys' tennis team moved within one win of matching last year's win total with a 6-1 Northwest Conference win against Ferndale Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Ferndale High.

Storm players Carter Thulin, Drew Segren and Kevin Smiley each won their singles matches, and Squalicum's doubles teams swept their matches.

Rafe Stanage, Ferndale's No. 1 singles player, was the only Golden Eagle to record a win. He beat Avery Wolfe 6-0, 6-0.

"Rafe did an excellent job," Ferndale coach Rudy Vendiola said in a phone interview. "He made adjustments to his game and carried the win for the team."

Squalicum (5-1, 5-1 NWC) hosts city-rival Bellingham next at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, while Ferndale (0-6, 0-6) travels to Burlington-Edison at 3:30 p.m. the same day.
