GLACIER - The road to Artist Point will be closed during the day for one week, starting Monday, Sept. 30, for tree removal.
Five miles of Mount Baker Highway, eight miles east of Glacier, will be closed from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Friday, Oct. 4. Crews will remove about 100 dead or dying trees that are at risk of falling into the highway. The Department of Transportation is taking this preventive action after a December 2012 storm knocked down about 175 trees, closing Mount Baker Highway for three days.
The department plans to reopen the road before it closes again for the winter. Check the highway's status at wsdot.wa.gov/Northwest/Baker/Construction/default.htm before heading to Artist Point.
The stretch of Mount Baker Highway between the ski area and Artist Point opened this year on July 1, the earliest date in eight years. The section of road closes after the first heavy snow of the fall, usually between late September and late October.
