Sehome falls to Anacortes in conference game

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 21, 2013

There was no way for Sehome to contain Anacortes quarterback Jared Douglas, Friday, Sept. 20, in Anacortes. The Seahawks' quarterback rushed for 186 yards and two touchdowns on 41 attempts, as the Mariners failed to stop Douglas, losing 27-23 during a Class 2A/3A Northwest Conference game Friday, Sept. 20, in Anacortes.

Douglas also had some success through the air going 5 for 13 with 159 yards passing and three touchdowns.

"(In the second half) we tried to bring more pressure on him, but he kept grinding out yards," Sehome coach Bob Norvell said.

The Mariners were led by quarterback Daniel Ziegler, who rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns on 15 attempts and threw for 79 yards on 6 for 16 passing.

The game was scoreless until late in the second quarter when Gavin Kaepernick launched a long field goal to put Sehome up 3-0.

In the third quarter, the scoring busted open. Anacortes started it off as Andrew Medalia grabbed a 19-yard touchdown pass from Douglas. Sehome answered as Ziegler ran 72 yards for a touchdown just two minutes later.

Anacortes answered with Douglas' 2-yard rushing touchdown, but Ziegler stymied the Seahawks' momentum by returning the kickoff 99 yards for another score to put Sehome up, 17-13.

Just two minutes after Ziegler's kick return, Douglas hit receiver Joe D'Amelio with a bomb for an 87-yard touchdown pass. Anacortes had been trying to hit the long pass all night, but was thrown off by an offensive pass interference or under throwing the receiver.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Sehome ended a long drive with a Ziegler rushing touchdown from 1 yard out to go up 23-20.

Douglas calmly marched his team down the field, taking short run after short run, to eat up seven minutes of the game clock before punching the ball in with a 2-yard rush and just 1:12 remaining. During the drive, Sehome couldn't find an answer for Douglas' evasive rushing up the middle when it needed to. Douglas used his 6-foot-2 inch frame to stretch out for extra yardage on each run.

With time winding down, Ziegler marched his team from its own 20-yard line to midfield, before the drive stalled on three consecutive incompletions. Ziegler had one more shot at a first down and evaded three Anacortes defensive linemen before throwing up a pass that was just a bit too far out of his receiver's reach.

"(As the pass was in the air) I'm going 'don't throw it so far!'" Norvell said of the last play.
