The Meridian girls' soccer team defeated Nooksack Valley 11-1 on Thursday, Sept. 19, at Nooksack Valley.

Lexi McKinnon wasted no time getting the Trojans out to an early lead, scoring in the second minute off an assist from Payton Lunde. Haley Belanger followed that up with a goal of her own in the 24th minute off an assist from Taylor Lunde. Despite the strong start, Meridian only entered halftime with a 3-1 lead after a late goal by Nooksack Valley's Tori VandeHoef.

"A win is always a good win, but the first half, we just were not sharp," Meridian coach Andrea Ames said in a phone interview.

The Trojans would eventually figure things out, scoring eight goals from the 50th minute on.

"Once we got it figured out, the flood gates opened," Ames said.

Both Janessa Murphy and Taylor Lunde scored twice in the second half. Belanger and McKinnon added a goal in the second half to bring their total in the game to two goals a piece, as well.
