Whatcom Middle School's Buswell named state assistant principal of the year

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 19, 2013

BELLINGHAM - Whatcom Middle School's Ann Buswell has been named the 2014 Assistant Principal of the Year for Washington state.

The Association of Washington School Principals awarded Buswell the title for her role in Whatcom's instructional and structural changes over the past 10 years. In 2003-04 Buswell helped the school implement content-based teaching teams that share the same groups of students, something that has created a culture of professional exploration and collaboration, according to the association.

Buswell also helped the school transition to and from temporary spaces after a 2009 fire gutted the school while it was being renovated. Before starting as Whatcom's assistant principal in 1997, Buswell was a Shuksan Middle School sixth-grade teacher for seven years.

She will be honored at the Washington Educators' Conference in October and will be a candidate for National Assistant Principal of the Year.
