Lynden Lions girls' swimming preview capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 19, 2013

LYNDEN

LIONS

Coach: Linda Bode

Last year: Finished fourth in the Northwest Conference standings with a record of 4-3. ... Did not place top 16 during the Class 2A State Swimming and Diving Championships. ... Finished 4-4 overall.

Swimmers to watch: Sarah Hollander (so.); Annie Uribe (so.); Jaydyn Elias (so.); Shelby Umbaugh (sr.)

Outlook: With only one senior, it may take a few years for the Lions to be true contenders in the Northwest Conference. But coach Linda Bode has a number of talented sophomores who could become state-level swimmers. Right now, though, Bode is simply trying to get her team into proper shape to compete in duels. "We are coming together fine," Bode said in a phone interview. "We got some numbers, but we are still pretty young. It's just conditioning that we are working on." Bode figures it might take until the middle of the season for her club to get where she wants them physically. Led by Sarah Hollander, Lynden was a trio of promising sophomores to build around. Annie Uribe and Jaydyn Elias are the others, and senior Shelby Umbaugh will contribute in sprints once she returns to the team. "We may be always in the middle of the pack, but that is OK as long as there is improvement," Bode said.
