Squalicum Storm girls' swimming preview capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 19, 2013

Coach: Steve Gibb

Last year: Finished second in the Northwest Conference with a 6-1 record. ... Placed sixth with 139 points during the Class 2A State Swimming and Diving Championships. ... Finished 7-1 overall.

Swimmers to watch: Josephine Hegeberg (sr.); Maddie Dohm (sr.); Madi Krussow (sr.); Samantha Jones (sr.); Abby VonFeldt (jr.); Shaye Fowler (jr.); Sydney Wong (fr.)

Outlook: The Storm is a well-balanced group of skilled upperclassmen and talented newcomers. Squalicum placed sixth during the state meet a year ago, and all indications suggests coach Steve Gibb's group will again contend for a state title. "Squalicum is racing off the blocks this year with a good core of returning swimmers along with an impressive freshman class," Gibb wrote in an email. "They are dedicating this season to team spirit, unity and goals to improve and reach deep into postseason." Headlining the Storm is versatile senior Josephine Hegeberg, who finished fifth at the state meet in the breaststroke and seventh in the 200 free. Maddie Dohm is a talented sprinter, and Madi Krussow and Samantha Jones give Squalicum two divers who can record big state-meet points. Freshman Sydney Wong has already distinguished herself as one to watch, posting five state qualifying times through two meets this year. "The key for us to reach our goals is to keep focused on our attitude towards meaningful workouts," Gibb wrote.
