Sehome Mariners girls' swimming preview capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 19, 2013

Coach: Don Helling

Last year: Won a Northwest Conference title, finishing first with a 7-0 league record. ... Placed fourth with 151 points during the Class 2A State Swimming and Diving Championships. ... Finished 8-0 overall.

Swimmers to watch: Gwendolyn Roley (jr.); Hannah Holmgren (so.); Ellie Poehlman (jr); Megan Mundell (jr); Shirley Lam (sr.); Nina Djukvic (sr.); Leah Day (so.); Zoey Shackel (sr.)

Outlook: The Mariners may not have the top-end swimmers coach Don Helling is accustomed to having, but Sehome is a deep, deep group. After placing fourth last year during the state championships, Sehome is looking for another strong finish. "We have state-level kids," Helling said, "but it's whether they can take that step up to state scoring. Gwen (Roley) was a state champion last year, so she's got it in her. Now we have to see if the rest of those state girls can get up there and score like Gwen." Senior Shirley Lam, who placed seventh in backstroke and 10th in the IM during 2012 state, and juniors Ellie Poehlman, Hannah Holmgren and Megan Mundell are all skilled swimmers and ones Helling can hope elevate to Roley's level by season's end. Nina Djukvic, Leah Day, diver Zoey Shackel, McKenna Sakamoto, Sophie Grambo, Kelly Cooper and Savanna Schoenecker should each contribute to the Mariners' success.
