Ferndale Golden Eagles girls' swimming preview capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 19, 2013

FERNDALE

GOLDEN EAGLES

Coach: Julia Garrison

Last year: Finished seventh in the Northwest Conference with a 1-6 record. ... Did not place top 16 during the Class 3A State Swimming and Diving Championships.

Swimmers to watch: Caitlin Wilhoite (jr.); Alyssa Rankin (jr.); Anne Marie (sr.); Marissa Cruz (sr.)

Outlook: Though Ferndale finished with only one meet win last season, coach Julia Garrison has a group she feels can improve at a strong rate. "Even though we had a third of our team graduate last year, we have many returning swimmers, which has allowed us to progress at an accelerated pace," Garrison wrote in an email. "We have always had a resilient team, and this year is no different. We have strong captains leading the team, a well-versed coach and motivated swimmers with the best attendance percentage we've every had." All good signs for Ferndale. Seniors Anne Marie (100 fly) and Marissa Cruz (500 free) should be key to Ferndale's success, and juniors Alyssa Rankin (100 breaststroke) and Caitlin Wilhoite (100 backstroke) will also be relied on to score points. "The biggest key for our swim team to develop into a stronger team starts with its leaders," Garrison wrote.
