The Lynden football team starts the 2013 Associated Press Washington High School Football Poll at the same spot it left off last season.

The Lions (2-0), who have won the past two Class 2A state titles, received eight of 10 first-place votes cast by a statewide panel of sports writers and editors to assume the top spot in the first 2A poll of the season.

Tumwater, the team Lynden beat in last year's state championship game, received the other two top votes and sits six points behind the Lions, who travel to face Mount Baker on Friday, Sept. 20.

The Mountaineers (2-0), who reached the state semifinals last year, check in at No. 6 in the Class 1A poll, behind top-ranked Zillah. The Leopards received seven first-place votes, while second-ranked Cascade Christian received the other two.

Lummi (1-1), which also reached the state semifinals last year, opened tied for third with Colton in the Class 1B poll. The Blackhawks travel to Taholah on Friday. Neah Bay was a unanimous No. 1 selection in the poll.

Ferndale (2-0) just missed making the top 10 in Class 3A, as the Golden Eagles received nine points - six less than 10th-place Lincoln. They'll host Garfield this week. Not surprisingly, Bellevue was a unanimous No. 1 selection in the classification.

Burlington-Edison (2-0) was the only other Northwest Conference team to grace the poll, as the Tigers rank No. 4 in Class 2A behind Othello. Burlington will face Skagit County rival Mount Vernon on Friday.

Lakewood, which beat Meridian 27-12 last week and travels to face Blaine on Friday, was ranked No. 6 in the 2A poll, while Tri-Cities Prep, which will host Meridian on Saturday, Sept. 21, received votes in the Class 2B poll.

Camas was a unanimous No. 1 selection in Class 4A, while defending state champion Morton White Pass received seven of eight votes and the top spot in the 2B poll.
