BELLINGHAM - More than 4,000 Western Washington University students will return to campus to move into dorms and apartments Friday, Sept. 20 through Sunday, Sept. 22.

Area stores likely will be busy with back-to-school shoppers over the weekend.

The move-in coincides with several popular Bellingham events, including Bite of Bellingham on Sept. 22 and Bellingham Beer Week, Sept. 20 to 29.

About 70 percent of the students who will live on campus are new to Western, with about 2,800 incoming freshmen and 925 transfer students for fall.

The first day of classes at the university is Wednesday, Sept. 25. Total fall enrollment is expected to be 15,000.

Leading up to the first day, Western will host a series of welcome-back events, including the Associated Students Red Square Info Fair on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 23 and 24, and a fireworks display after the Welcoming Convocation Tuesday.
