Squalicum beats Bellingham; Hegeberg posts 2 state-qualifying times

The Squalicum girls' swim team opened league play with a 114-72 win against Bellingham, posting three state-qualifying times Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Arne Hanna Aquatic Center.

The Storm won 10 of 12 events, and Josephine Hegeberg qualified for state in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 21.20 seconds and the 100 breaststroke with a 1:13.60.

"I feel bad for (Bellingham swimmer Maddie) Gillman," said Squalicum coach Steve Gibb in a phone interview. Gillman also swam to state-qualifying times. "Gillman had to go against our best swimmer, and they were great races."

Squalicum's Sydney Wong, who was a part of three winning races, posted a state-qualifying time in the 500 freestyle. She swam a 5:38.60. Bellingham's Ellie Kindlund won diving with a score of 156.3 points.

Squalicum hosts Archbishop Murphy next at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at Arne Hanna Aquatic Center.
