Nelson to celebrate Guinness record

A celebration of Brandon Nelson's Guinness Book of World Records' new record for farthest distance canoed or kayaked on flat water in 24 hours will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday Sept. 22, at the Squalicum Boathouse at 2600 Harbor Loop in Zuanich Point Park in Bellingham.

Nelson officially went 244.42 km (or 151.87 miles), beating American Carter Johnson's mark of 241.95 km (150.34 miles), set in 2006, on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

The event is to thank all in the community who helped Nelson accomplish his record.

Two 2-time Olympic gold medalists, kayaker Greg Barton and rower Eleanor Logan, will attend for a meet-and-greet and photos.

Souvenir magazines with photos from the world record project, and a color copy of the Official Guinness Book of World Records certificate are free for all the kids.


Two-person teams are needed for the 2013 Fall Indoor Golf League, which takes place from Oct. 22 to Dec. 19.

Matches take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Participants choose times and dates.

Matches are nine holes of match play, two individual matches and one team match with three points possible,

Accumulate points for each of the ten weeks and a net and gross team will be crowned champions.

The Pirates came through the losers' bracket and won the championship game of the Borderline Baseball League over the Brewers.

Jacob Ferry pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts for the Pirates.

Luke Vander Vliet was 3 for 4 with an RBI and Rich Larson was 3 for 3 with a double for the Brewers.

Dustin Suiter was 3 for 4 with a double, two stolen bases and two runs, Dugger Roth was 2 for 3 with a double, run and RBI and Arlen Pelleboer had three RBI for the Pirates.


The Mariner AAU 7th grade boys' basketball team is holding tryouts from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sept. 17-18 at the Fairhaven Middle School's east gym.


Erik Dyrland aced the No. 11 hole at Shuksan Golf Course on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Dyrland used a 6-iron on the 158-yard hole.
